Leeds Sustainable Marine Team

Who we are

Leeds Sustainable Marine Team (LSMT) brings together students and academics at the University of Leeds to explore how engineering can support a more sustainable future on the water. We share an interest in marine technology and a drive to turn ideas into practical projects.

Our work connects technical learning with the challenges of designing and developing marine systems. Through collaboration, research and hands-on engineering, we aim to understand how decisions about energy, materials and design influence both performance and environmental impact.

Our purpose

Marine engineering presents an opportunity to rethink how vessels are designed, powered and operated. Our purpose is to explore that opportunity while giving students experience of working on a shared engineering challenge.

We aim to make sustainability part of the design process from the beginning. That means considering efficiency, reliability and responsible use of resources alongside the practical demands of a working vessel.

How we work

Our projects encourage us to move from initial concepts towards engineering decisions supported by research, analysis and testing. We learn by asking questions, comparing approaches and refining our ideas as our understanding develops.

Working as a team also means recognising how different parts of a project depend on each other. Mechanical, electrical and design decisions must work together, making clear communication and collaboration essential.

Learning through experience

LSMT gives students a setting in which to apply what they learn at university and develop skills beyond the classroom. Alongside technical work, our projects create opportunities to practise planning, problem-solving, leadership and communicating engineering ideas.

We value curiosity and a willingness to learn. Sharing knowledge across the team helps members build confidence, take responsibility and contribute to a common goal.

Building connections

We welcome conversations with organisations and individuals who share our interest in sustainable marine technology. Technical advice, industry insight and project support can help connect student engineering with real-world challenges.

These relationships offer opportunities to exchange ideas, learn from experience and support the development of the next generation of engineers.
